"Sway" • 2022
Isaac Lotz is a Toronto artist born in Montreal. He graduated from OCADU in the late 1980s in commercial design and illustration.
In the early 1990s, Isaac bought his first Mac computer and started teaching himself graphic design programs. During the same period, he also taught himself traditional fine art mediums, thus beginning a series of oil paintings featuring large flowers and still life resulting in solo and group shows.
Founding a graphic design company in the mid-’90s and raising a young family meant placing a hold on his fine art endeavours, which only was renewed towards the end of the pandemic. Combining his extensive background in graphics and new media with his oil painting aesthetic, this new body of abstract artwork is created using digital rendering.
Isaac has created over 300 artworks in this new direction. Inspiration for his most recent series comes from an interest in minimal electronic music (IDM, Glitch and ambient) involving spontaneous form, line, colour, patterns and textures. Oversized shapes, heavy brush marks, and thin lines evoke a zen-like quality, with a pastel colour palette defining most compositions. Spontaneous digital markings utilize ink, airbrush, watercolour, graphite, oil, pencils and even collages.
The consistent size of 28” W x 20” H, with most of the art landscape orientation, gives the series a connected feeling. There is a peaceful but playfulness to the artwork. Isaac’s new works are printed on Hahnemühle Archival paper and framed. The painting is either a one-of-kind or a limited edition of 10.
